
AIWA provides literacy classes to homecare workers and other AIWA women members. The classes have focused on strengthening verbal skills, particularly conversational English, with a goal for students to clearly express themselves orally in English.
Students learn how to respond to requests for help specific to their workplaces. For example, their English speaking client might request: “Please wash the dishes first and then I need my medicine.” At the start of the semester, students select topics that they find most necessary to express their most urgent needs for English which include, but are not limited to the following:
In response to growing needs, women leaders of AIWA lead workplace safety trainings. In addition, based on community demand, AIWA started a digital literacy / smartphone course. Women members can increase their knowledge & skills with using the Internet and smartphones, which are increasingly required in their workplaces.
